Transmissions
An automobile’s transmission, which connects the engine to the
wheels and adjusts the speed with which the wheels turn, is a key part
of the automobile’s well being; the mechanics at Ewell Auto Service
in Fort Worth can offer excellent service for your automobile’s
transmission.
Manual Transmissions are the simplest to understand and maintain.
The operator of a manual transmission can choose one of several ratios
of speed (gears) by operating a lever. To allow smooth shifting from
one gear to another, a clutch intervenes between the engine and the transmission.
Automatic Transmissions don’t require as much driver intervention
but have more complicated parts in the system.
An automatic transmission has not one but several clutches, although
the driver does not have to operate them as they operate automatically.
The transmission includes not only these clutches, but the overall torque
converter, various valves, fluid passages, servo-mechanisms, a planetary
gear system with several different sizes of synchronized gears, hydraulic
pumps, a governor, microprocessor-controlled electronic sensors and various
other devices.
Protecting and maintaining the transmission will save you expensive
repairs.
One of the chief ways that people damage the automatic transmission
is by racing the engine with the wheels slipping, producing heat that
damages
the transmission. Rapid acceleration and sudden stops, rapidly shifting
from forward to reverse, “rocking” the car to get unstuck—all
these damage the transmission. Shifting from forward to reverse or vice
versa while the car is still moving can also cause damage. It’s
important to change the transmission fluid and filter regularly because
being low on fluid can damage the transmission. The transmission fluid
can leak, hitting the hot exhaust pipe and creating a burning odor; the
repair requires a new transmission seal. If you see a spot on the ground
under your car that is oily and red, it is likely transmission fluid
and you likely have a leak. Never accelerate rapidly when towing anything,
because it is a strain on the automatic transmission to get the extra
weight moving. If you do tow something heavy regularly, you may need
a heavy-duty radiator or transmission cooler.
At Ewell Auto Service in Fort Worth, we will help you keep your transmission
in good working working order with regular service and appropriate
repairs to extend the life of your transmission.
