The oil pressure in your automobile is as important to its well being as your blood pressure is to you. An automobile’s lubrication system gets oil, at the right temperature and consistency, to every moving part in the engine so that it can move easily. The pistons need oil so they can move smoothly in the cylinders. Bearings that allow things like the crankshaft and camshafts to rotate freely need oil. Whenever the flow of oil is interrupted, friction happens between the moving parts, and serious damage can result. Bearings can become scarred or even melt. In some cases, the whole engine might have to be replaced. If the oil pressure warning signal on the dashboard of your car indicates a problem, believe that it is a serious problem! The lubricating system includes an oil pump, oil filter, oil sump, and pressure gauges.

An oil pump sucks oil out of the pan, runs it through an oil filter to remove any grit, and then delivers it under pressure where it is needed; the oil then drips down into the oil sump, where it is collected so that the cycle can be repeated.

Wearing out of the oil pump can cause a pressure loss.

Routine check of the oil pump is necessary. If it wears out, the lubricating system will not work properly.

The oil filter does a dirty but important job, so be sure it’s working.

Leaks can develop throughout the system. Make it practice to have routine oil changes and checkups. If you notice spots or puddles of oil on the ground where you park your car, and have added oil, be sure to check the oil dip stick every day for a week afterwards to be sure there isn’t a leak.

When does my automobile need its oil changed or need a new oil filter?

Fluids in an automobile should be checked at least once a month. At least every change of season, the oil and oil filter need changing. But if you do a lot of stop and go traffic driving or drive in dusty areas, change more often. Every 3000 miles is one criterion. Check the air filter. If it needs to be changed more frequently than once a year, you probably need to change oil more frequently.

What oil should my automobile use?

It is important to have the right grade of motor oil for your particular automobile and the particular location you are driving in. With the many different sizes of vehicles on the road today, and with the many different driving conditions we encounter in our travels, it is important to know which oil to use at any given time and place. The same car driven in East Texas might use one kind of oil but need a different kind in North Dakota.

Oil gets thinner when heated, so your automobile engine needs an oil thick or heavy enough to do its job even when the engine gets hot. On the other hand, oil must be thin enough to work when the car is first starting up and is cold. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) have set the standards for acceptable viscosity, or thick or thinness of oil, but there are a number of different oils that meet these standards.
