History
Four generations of Fort Worth residents have placed their confidence
in the quality work at Ewell Auto Service, which has operated in the
same location at 2000 West Berry in Fort Worth since 1941, when Frank
D. “Bud” Ewell first began delivering coal and heating oil
to Fort Worth residents.
“Just this week one of our customers told me his great grandfather
used to come here, as did his grandfather and his father,” says
Kyle Stallard, who started working at Ewell’s when he was in high
school in 1959 and knows these return customers very well.
Kyle’s father, Ken Stallard, was manager of the body shop at Ewell
at the time Kyle started working there. “At first I just did odd
jobs, cleaning up, helping out, learning things, ”Kyle says. “My
dad worked here at Ewell for twenty years until he retired in 1981. I
grew up in this place. My dad and Bud
Ewell both had a strong sense of ethics and cared about doing a good
job, doing it correctly, and standing behind their work. We still do
that today. People trust us and our work, and we value that above all
else.”
The Ewell and Stallard families have both long been involved
at Ewell Auto Service.
When Bud Ewell and, later, Ken Stallard finally retired,
their sons, Jack Ewell and Kyle Stallard bought the business. When Jack
retired , Kyle bought him out. Kyle’s sister has been receptionist
at Ewell for eight years now, and her friendly, helpful presence is valued
by all of Ewell’s faithful customers.
“Bud retired in 1977, but he was down here all the time until
about 1982, even after he retired. He and my dad loved this place,” Stallard
says. “We still work hard to live up to their reputations.”
Since 1945, when Bud Ewell starting selling gasoline and providing
service, Ewell Auto Service has always been on the cutting edge of
all new developments
in automobile service, equipment, and certified training for service
technicians.
When Ewell Auto Service became, in 1946, a full service station, providing
auto repairs on all makes and models of automobiles, it was one of the
first full service stations in town.
When the paint and body shop was added in 1955, Ewell’s was one
of the few locations that provided in one convenient location repairs,
paint and body work, and fuel.
Ewell’s was, in 1956, the first auto repair facility in the state
of Texas to purchase and use dynometers, a device that can allow an automobile’s
wheels to turn and the engine to get up to full speed while the automobile
stays in one spot in the repair shop, allowing technicians to better
diagnose problems with the engine.
Ewell Auto Service today continues to acquire and use the most
advanced equipment and training to provide for quality work on all
models of automobiles,
old and new.
Ewell’s has won several state and county awards for excellence,
including several “Best in Tarrant County” Star Telegram
awards.
For a number of years, Ewell Auto Service was the facility used by the
Better Business Bureau to give the Bureau “outside,” unbiased
expert opinion when the Bureau had complaints about other auto repair
shops; Ewell’s diagnosis was part of the basis for settlement in
these arbitrations.
“All of us who work here live in this community and are proud
to take part in what goes on here. We donate, of course, to TCU and the
high school athletic programs, as well as various other local organizations.
We want to give back to the community in gratitude for the trust they
continue to give us by bringing us their vehicles for service and repair,” Kyle
said recently. “I want the great grandchildren of these customers
to remember me and Ewell Auto Service the way they remember Bud Ewell
and Ken Stallard, as someone they can rely on for honest treatment and
quality workmanship.”
